Cinterion EMS31-X

The Cinterion EMS31-X is an LTE Cat. M1 wireless module designed for industrial IoT applications, supporting LTE bands 2, 4, 12, and 13. This highly compact module measures 27.6 x 18.8 x 2.1 mm and weighs approximately 2.7 grams, operating reliably in extreme temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.

Built on 3GPP Release 13 standards, the EMS31-X delivers download speeds up to 300 kbps and upload speeds up to 375 kbps through its single antenna, half-duplex design. The module features enhanced coverage capabilities with up to 15 dB improvement for deep penetration into challenging environments like basements and warehouses. Advanced power management features including Power Saving Mode (PSM), eDRX, and a rapid wake-up/sleep mechanism enable battery-operated devices to achieve up to 10-year battery life with suspend and resume in less than one second.

The module operates on a supply voltage range of 3.3 to 4.5V and provides comprehensive connectivity through multiple interfaces including high-speed serial interfaces (up to 920 kbps), dual UICC/SIM card interfaces supporting 1.8V/3V, I²C, and ADC interfaces. It supports embedded TCP/IP stack with transparent and non-transparent IP services, including TCP/UDP client and server, HTTP/FTP/SMTP client, and TLS security support.

The EMS31-X is controlled via AT commands (3GPP TS 27.007 and 27.005) plus Cinterion-specific AT commands, and includes SIM Application Toolkit Release 99 support. It features embedded MIM preparation, firmware update capability via application and Over-the-Air (OTA), LWM2M support, and SMS functionality via NAS in both text and PDU modes. The module includes Verizon APN class handling and holds FCC, GCF, IC, UL, and PTCRB certifications, with Verizon and AT&T mobile operator approvals.
