Cinterion BGS5

The Cinterion BGS5 is an advanced 2G wireless module designed for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications, featuring a compact LGA66 form factor measuring just 27.6 x 18.8 x 2.7 mm and weighing only 3 grams. This quad-band GSM module operates on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz frequencies and supports GPRS Class 12 with data rates up to 85.6 kbps for both uplink and downlink communications.

Built with an embedded Java virtual machine (Java profile IMP-NG & CLDC 1.1 HI), the BGS5 enables direct application processing within the module, reducing device complexity and bill of materials costs. The module includes 5 MB RAM and 10 MB Flash file system for application storage, supporting multi-threading programming and multi-application execution. Its integrated TCP/IP stack provides comprehensive internet services including TCP/UDP server/client, DNS, Ping, FTP client, and HTTP client functionality, with secure data transmission capabilities through HTTPS/SSL.

The BGS5 offers extensive connectivity options including USB 2.0 high-speed interface with multiple composite modes, dual serial interfaces with automatic baud rate detection, digital audio interface, I2C, ADC, and 4 GPIO pins. It supports both 1.8V and 3.0V UICC/SIM card interfaces and features SIM Application Toolkit Class 3 compliance. The module operates on a 3.3-4.5V power supply optimized for minimal power consumption and functions reliably in extreme temperatures from -40°C to +85°C.

Key features include integrated FOTA (Firmware Over-The-Air) updates that are configurable and royalty-free, RLS monitoring for jamming detection, informal network scan capabilities, and support for customer IMEI/SIM-Lock variants. The module is controlled via standardized and extended AT commands and includes serial interface modem drivers for Windows operating systems. With certifications including CE, R&TTE, GCF, FCC, PTCRB, UL, and IC, plus compliance with EuP, RoHS, and REACH standards, the BGS5 is ideal for applications such as track and trace, automatic meter reading, remote maintenance and control, and aftermarket telematics.
